In the face of god
Paige Taul

Video

2018
Length: 3:25 min.
Language: English

Paige Taul’s work engages with and subsequently challenges assumptions about black cultural expression and notions of belonging through experimental cinematography. As part of her cinematic practice, she tests the boundaries of identity and self-identification through autoethnography to approach notions of racial authenticity. Her interest lies in observing environmental and familial connections to concepts tied to racial expectations, and in uncovering these boundaries of identity in various areas such as religion, style, language, and other experiences of the black community.

HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark presents Paige Taul’s video works I am (2017), In the face of god (2018), and 10:28,30 (2019).

In In the face of god (2018), Taul explores serendipity (accidental observation of something not originally sought) in her parents’ encounter, mediated by a championship boxing match.
