Text

Katherine Bernhardt is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American art, whose expressive painting focuses on a globalized media and consumer culture. The HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark is dedicating its first institutional solo exhibition in Europe to her. This publication documents a selection of key works from recent years and offers unprecedented contextualization of her body of work. The title is a German neologism that unites the elements essential to her artistic approach into a single entity: neon – color – glare – luminance – force – painting – retina – collision – danger. As a gesture of overwhelming intensity and a condensation of experiential logic, the title refers to a body of work that directly targets perception, sensory intensity, and visual superimposition.
