Diego Bianchi’s interventions at the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark set the institution in motion in various levels. He alteres the architecture of the central hall and installes paths and platforms that visitors can walk on, and places sculptures throughout the space in such a way that they appear like caricatured characters or leading actors in a dystopian, vibrant stage landscape.

However, Errores Irreales is only truly activated by the performance staged by Diego Bianchi himself in order to complete his theatrical installation, which takes physicality and its limits to a new level. The bodies that appear in the performance not only mobilize the exhibition, but also trouble the dualism of object and subject, as live bodies interact with sculptural works.

Bianchi already has extensive experience in staging and curating performances, and he continues to create new performative works for his specific exhibitions. For Errores Irreales, he has worked with both experienced and amateur performers to breathe additional life into his exhibition and sculptures. In this performance, the protagonists take the things around them so seriously that their own bodies become object-like and part of the setting at the same time: the participating performers become active elements of a machinery that forms a kind of Gesamtwerk. Bringing themselves into contact with walls or sculptures, for example with a nose, a mouth, or arms, the performers connect bodies, space, and objects to form a charged and communicating whole.

The interplay between installation, sculptures, visitors, and occasional performers aims to create an energetic atmosphere conducive to dialogue, where entrenched dualisms such as subject/object or nature/culture might be challenged. Bianchi’s work can be understood as a form of counterculture, advocating for a fragmentary, open understanding of the social and questioning a worldview driven by consumption, success, and power. Bianchi’s installation invites visitors not only to observe, but to actively participate and become part of this unique performative perspective.
