On the occasion of her recently opened exhibition A Song of Ascents at the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, Louise Giovanelli will be in conversation with curator Marie-Charlotte Carrier. Carrier is a curator at the exhibition’s initiating partner organization, The Hepworth Wakefield (Yorkshire), where the exhibition was shown in advance. She is also the editor of the accompanying publication with texts, conversations and visual material on all the works on display. The joint discussion leads through the conception of the exhibition and the motivation and realization of the individual works of art. In particular, the central thematic issues of the project will be discussed, which focus on spirituality and ecstasy, not least youthfulness, music and other spheres that can be reached through these.
Giovanelli’s working method is characterized by the precise layering of highly pigmented oil paints, from which the plasticity and luminosity of her paintings derive. The representation of the ephemeral, the transitional and the exaggerated are at the heart of her art, which is a play on ambiguity that invites the viewer to cross thresholds between reality and fantasy.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an 80-page English-language publication of the same title, edited by The Hepworth Wakefield, and available via HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark as project partner. It will include a text by Phoebe Cripps, a conversation with Louise Giovanelli and Marie-Charlotte Carrier, a pop quiz by Charlie Fox, and poems by Helenskià Collett, with reproductions and illustrations of all the works shown in the exhibition.
