The exhibition Future of Melancholia explores how art can influence our understanding of the future, focusing on expressions of melancholy as manifestations of contemporary insecurities and nostalgic longings. By juxtaposing Serbian and Austrian artists from different generations, a dialog on surrealist, fantastic and allegorical representations that reflect social and historical developments. As a cooperation between the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, the exhibition highlights the cultural connections between the two countries and emphasizes the global relevance of melancholic tendencies in contemporary art.

The exhibition at the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark in Graz sheds light on the Surrealist tendencies of three generations of Serbian from the 1920s to the present day. Historical works by artists associated with the Belgrade Surrealist group are shown alongside works by 20th century and contemporary artists, all of whom combine the surreal with allegories, nostalgia and metaphysical themes, thereby opening up international dialogues.

After a joint tour of the Future of Melancholia exhibition, we will reflect and discuss the themes of the exhibition together. Our conversation will be recorded and produced as a radio program to be later broadcast on Radio Helsinki.
