In his artistic work, Mathias Poledna deals with the theme of modernity and how it appears and articulates itself in different contexts. For his exhibition at HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, he combines his film “My Favorite Shop” (2024) with a carpet designed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström as well as historical photographs from an Italian car factory from the 1960s to create a dialogue between the late modernist building and the works of art.

In doing so, he addresses criticism of institutional structures and exhibition policies that emerged from modernism and reflects on the intertwining of art, politics and business. Poledna draws on historical concepts such as institutional critique and conceptual art from the 1960s and 1970s and combines these with an examination of the effects of modernism on the present. Through his precise, aesthetically reduced way of working, he creates works that question normative image economies and at the same time reflect on the fast pace of the art and culture industry.

Caro Feistritzer, curatorial assistant at the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, will lead the dialogical tour for the audience. After the tour, you can continue to talk about the exhibition over a drink.
