Together with you, we would like to write about and through Mathias Poledna’s exhibition!

The work of Mathias Poledna repeatedly deals with pop-cultural phenomena and makes references to fashion, music, art history and history. For his exhibition at HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, he shot a film in Los Angeles this summer that extends across several rooms as an installation work. The Austrian conceptual artist considers this exhibition as a kind of retrospective and has therefore also chosen one work by other artists to accompany his own – such as a Swedish tapestry from 1928 as well as a series of photographs by himself dealing with the design and production conditions of automobiles in the 1950s. All the works are not only in dialog with each other, but also with the architecture of the institution itself, which was built as a late modernist exhibition building in 1952.

On the basis of the exhibition, we will take a joint tour during our first meeting and talk about central themes such as modernism and modernity, the position of the artist, but also historicity, and clarify these terms in advance. What do these complex-sounding words mean and how does Poledna deal with them in his exhibition?

In a second meeting (two weeks later), the participants will present their first text samples. The form of the text is completely up to the participants; they can write stories, poems, but also reviews, i.e. exhibition reviews. The workshop leaders then offer to revise the texts and thus help with the writing! This workshop also explicitly teaches that writing is not a solitary process, but always takes place in cooperation with others who correct and give tips, for example.

On the last date, 9.11.2024, the texts printed out on A3 will be presented and displayed in the foyer of HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark –å in other words, there will be a mini show in the institution that will run for a few more days.

The writing workshop is a cooperation with the Jugendliteraturwerkstatt Graz. The workshop is aimed at young people aged 14 to 19.
