Themed guided tour: Coney Island 

In the context of the exhibition RIDICULOUSLY YOURS! Art, Awkwardness and Enthusiasm, the two cooperating institutions HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark and Neue Galerie Graz/​Universalmuseum Joanneum regularly host dialogical tours dedicated to essential aspects of the comprehensive project along thematic focal points.

Enthusiastic awkwardness forms the basis of many works of art to this day and reaches back into the 19th century, if not much further. The exhibition includes works by 100 artists from around the world, spanning earlier centuries of art-making to the immediate present. Following the logic of a B‑movie storyboard, the exhibition itself is conceived like a walk-through film, with an opening scene followed by seven different chapters leading along the main narrative.

From the oversized vacuum cleaner in Jim Shaw’s Labyrinth: I Dreamt I was Taller than Jonathan Borofsky to the miniature Thirsty Duck by John Miller, the first chapter, Coney Island, opens up a circus-like world that sets the stage for the other exhibition rooms. Inspired by amusement parks such as New York’s Luna Park on Coney Island, we are greeted by a candy-colored environment with over-sized striped walls, where the scales don’t always seem quite right.

During the tour, the chapter Coney Island and its realization in the HALLE FÜR KUNST and the Neue Galerie will be explored through selected artistic positions, and the curatorial and design concept will be explained.

The tour begins at 5 p.m. at Neue Galerie Graz and continues afterwards at HALLE FÜR KUNST.
