On the occasion of Diagonale’23 and in the context of the exhibition sink by Heinrich Dunst, HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark is pleased to offer a special format with Film / Film / Fried Egg – A Reference to Peter Kubelka. Film has always played a role for Heinrich Dunst in his work. This can perhaps be seen most clearly in the exhibition A. B. a. P. / Antonio Banderas as Picasso (2019, Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna). The exhibition’s point of departure lies in wholly physical film footage, which Dunst appropriated in the form of cadre strips – a short piece of celluloid – from the renowned Austrian filmmaker Kubelka at a screening in Vienna. From this manageable material, Dunst developed a reference game for his exhibition that revolves around cinema, film, questions of originality and authorship with great wit. Dunst characterizes this transformative process as a travesty. Who is the author of what and who is only pretending? Kubelka, Dunst, Picasso, Banderas?

The event tries to take up this drive in a playful way. The title here also refers to Kubelka, who repeatedly described the frying of an egg as a dramatic and thus cinematic process. At the center of the experimental arrangement is the artist Heinrich Dunst, who shows excerpts from Chris Marcer’s Sans Soleil (1983) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoires des Cinema (1988), as well as a slide show on the exhibition A. B. a. P will be shown, flanked by the two moderators Peter Schernhuber (Intendant of the Diagonale) and Sandro Droschl (Director of the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark), who will each ask the artist a question. The result is an entertaining format with depth and its own perspective on what film is or could be.
