Harriet A. Washington

Online Book Launch (Online)

In the basement, a special lounge and reading area has been set up especially for the exhibitions by Doreen Garner and Kevin Jerome Everson, the so-called Study Room. There you will also find a series of publications that address topics such as black cinema and Austrian history and are intended to provide a broad context for the exhibition.

On selected dates, one of the books from the Study Room will be briefly introduced to provide important social background to the exhibition. This is done through the online publication of a short video.

November 5, 5 pm., Short video to the following publication:
Harriet A. Washington, Medical Apartheid. The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the present, Harlem Moon Broadway Books New York 2006.

Medical theorist and African American author Harriet A. Washington has written a chronological account of the crimes committed by the medical system in the USA. She shows how, in the name of scientific progress, a systematic exploitation and dehumanization of African slaves was committed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
