Exhibition Tour
In the basement, a special lounge and reading area has been set up especially for the exhibitions by Doreen Garner and Kevin Jerome Everson, the so-called Study Room. Starting from this stimulating and informative meeting point, there is a joint tour of the exhibition of the sought-after young New York artist Doreen Garner.
Doreen Garner shows the consequences of colonialism as well as racism and brings to light a dark chapter in American medical history, in which black bodies were exploited and dehumanized through medical experiments. Sculptural works are shown by the artist that resemble an accumulation of body fragments or pieces of flesh and are presented like merchandise in a display. Thus, on the one hand, the body parts are objectified and, on the other hand, they gain grace through the use of precious materials such as fabrics, crystals and pearls. It is undeniable that many people experience suffering, but the permanent questioning and marginalization of the black body, carried out through racism, has yet another dimension of its own. Thus, by immersing oneself in Garner’s works, many haunting questions arise.
