Long Night of Museums

Education

Action day

in cooperation with ORF

For the 21st time, ORF’s Long Night of Museums enables visitors to visit a variety of museums with just one ticket. This year, too, around 640 museums and galleries across Austria are taking part and opening their doors from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the morning.
In Graz, a good place to start is the Treffpunkt Museum on Jakominiplatz, from which a bus line specially set up for the Long Night of Museums. From 10 o’clock in the morning, you can also get your ticket for the Long Night of Museums there. The ticket can also be purchased in the participating houses. More information can be found at:

For the Long Night of Museums, the large exhibition space of the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark will host a solo exhibition featuring works by African-American experimental filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson. Sculptural works by African American artist Doreen Garner will be shown in the basement. Both are on view for the first time in Austria within an institutional solo show.

Kevin Jerome Everson is known, among other things, for exploring the everyday realities and working environments of diverse African American communities. Using several of the artist’s film works and two objects, the exhibition explores certain motifs in his work. Film works dealing with the observation of the sky are brought together with works showing African-American people in different situations. His film works offer an unusual perspective on matters of everyday life; they do not evaluate, but open the view and invite the viewer to search.

Doreen Garner uses sculpture and performance to address the problematic relationship between medicine and race. She engages with the American history of medicine and points out the inhumanities done to black bodies for the sake of progress. Garner uses unusual materials in her works, such as silicone, fiberglass insulation, artificial hair, crystals, and beads. Her works overflow with precious fillings, resembling fragmented body parts and appearing fragile and at the mercy of others.

The following program is offered for the Long Night of Museums:

6pm. — 12am.
Digiwalk: Audio Guide
For the two exhibitions on Kevin Jerome Everson and Doreen Garner in the large exhibition space and in the basement, the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark has strengthened digital mediation. The audio guide is available digitally and free of charge. Bring your headphones!
