Weekend Specials

Weekend's Special Outreach Programm

In addition to Saturday’s Walk & Talk” tours, in which we visit the exhibition together, we offer special formats to expand the educational programme.

Game Session(s): Art & My Career

Even though Katherine Bradford is considered one of the most relevant positions among US-American artists, it is still important to us to reflect on the structural discrimination of artists and other artworkers who are not read as male.

That’s why we would like to play the board game Art & My Career, lovingly developed by Olivia Hernaïz, together in a nice round on two Saturday afternoons. Based on 100 statements from curators, art workers and artists, Hernaïz invites us to understand the difficulties that women still face in the art world.

The Game Sessions will take place on the following Saturdays: 23 March 2024 and 18 May 2024, starting at 3 pm at HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark.

Paint on Radio: Radio Helsinki x HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark
Radio-Workshop

We cordially invite you to a radio workshop at HALLE FÜR KUNST on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 11am to 6pm. We would like to jointly record audio material in the exhibition Katherine Bradford: American Odyssey and produce a short emission for Radio Helsinki.

Based on Katherine Bradford’s first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, we would like to discuss central aspects negotiated in the exhibition. With her often larger-than-life figures, Bradford depicts diverse communities able to transcend constructions of racegender and class. Bradford’s painting can thus be understood as a contribution to a democratic visual language in a broader sense.

Central to the radio show, which we would like to produce in collaboration with you, is her artistic practice and her always intuitive approach. Based on perception and intuition, feelings and memory, dreams as well as experiences and everyday situations, she paints her bodies without any sketches or models. Color is always her starting point with which she experiments and from which her forms emerge. Her practice can be located in the tradition of color field painting and abstract expressionism. Her focus on her experience and by visualizing her memory makes possible to show that every life story is relevant, and needs to be heard.

Against this background, we would like to depart from the following questions:

  • What might communities enriched by or challenged by opposing ideas look like?
  • What role does diversity play in the creation of art and culture?
  • To what extent do the colors we perceive in this exhibition, including contrasts of dark and light, reflect emotions as well as the complexity of our society

Let’s look ask even more questions, potential answers and enlarge our perspective(s).

Radio is for everyone — including you! Discover the art of audio production with us! Let’s explore the world of free radio together and find a voice for diversity and community! The exhibition Katherine Bradford: American Odyssey will serve as the backdrop for our common journey!

We will meet on 20 April 2024 at 11 am at HALLE FÜR KUNST. Please register by 15 April 2024: cf@halle-fuer-kunst.at

Colour as a medium, abstraction & attraction
Interactive workshop for children aged 10 – 18

Katherine Bradford always thinks out of colour; it serves her as a point of departure as well as a final point. She combines abstraction with the figurative to create colorful scenes depicting both individuals and communities.

This interactive workshop will not only explore color as a medium, but also give children and young people the opportunity to experiment with color on large-format paper on a Saturday afternoon. In this way, young visitors can create their own superheroes, swimmers or even personal everyday heroes.

Dates: Saturday, 4 May 2024, from 2 – 5 pm, fee: 3 euros per person
Registration required by 3 May 2024 at cf@halle-fuer-kunst.at
