Ohne Titel, 1995
In the second room we first encounter a painted wooden object Ohne Titel (Untitled) (1995), a very early work by the artist and an exception in the sequence of works here, as (nearly) all the other works were developed and produced in the course of this exhibition. This object, made in 1995, derives from a period in which Dunst was exploring the forms of minimal painting with works that were noted in both national and international reception. This work can on the one hand be seen as a recourse to the origins of the practice of art, but it also already shows that the ambiguities that underpin Dunst’s works today also have a kind of tradition in his oeuvre. Within its context in this exhibition, this work gains a further interpretation that goes beyond its actual form, as it is reminiscent of a physical embodiment of Wandmalerei (Wall Painting) (2022 – 23) from the previous room.
