The artist and theorist Axel Stockburger works in the media of film and installation. He is an associate professor of art and cultural theory at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, a member of the artistic research platform Technopolitics, and a member of the board of the Secession in Vienna.
In the exhibited video Oswald Wiener, Stockburger develops a cinematic portrait based on an interview with Oswald Wiener conducted on October 10, 2020. The conversation was commissioned by the Kunsthalle Wien for the exhibition Cybernetics of the Poor (curators: Diedrich Diederichsen and Oier Etxeberria, 2020).
In one of his final interviews, Oswald Wiener addresses his career and several key concerns in a pointed yet self-critical manner. In it, Wiener discusses central concepts of his thinking — such as cybernetics, communication, systems, and the Turing machine – – and reflects on his work die verbesserung von mitteleuropa, roman (the improvement of central europe, a novel).
