Interview

Please note that this video is available in English.

For the first edition of the performance series curated by Cathrin Mayer Give Rise to.. Graz-born artist Armin Lorenz Gerold was invited to HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, where his performance Verstärkung (Amplification) took place in the large exhibition hall on August 20 and 21, 2021. Following the performance program, the artist also presented his newly published artist book Manuel or A Hint of Evil.

The 112-page artist’s book by Armin Lorenz Gerold arises from the story Manuel or A Hint of Evil, which can be read in the book both in text form and is accessible as a radio play version. It also includes texts by Alejandro Alonso Díaz and Anna Barfuss, an interview between Gerold and composer Lori. E. Allen and a foreword by Shahin Zarinba.

Manuel or A Hint of Evil unfolds from the perspective of an unnamed observer whose thoughts coalesce into an inner monologue as he makes regular visits to the summer pool olympic stadium in West Berlin, in the summer of 2020. At the pools, every now and then, he sees Manuel, a young man who, in the mind of the observer, becomes an animate object of an affectionate study of the possibility of encounter – and the abyss it presents.
